About the Author
Ulrich L. Rohde, Dr.Ing. habil., is a Professor of RF and Microwave at the University of Cottbus, Germany, Chairman of Synergy Microwave Corp. NJ, USA, Professor at Oradea University, Romania, honorary professor at IIT Delhi, India; President of Communications Consulting Corporation, FL, USA, and a partner in Rohde & Schwarz, Munich, Germany. Dr. Rohde is past member of the board of directors and a former executive vice president of Ansoft Corporation, now it is Ansys. He is an IEEE life Fellow, published over 300 scientific papers in professional journals and conferences, co-authored of 12 technical books and book chapters, over 3 dozens patents into his credits and recipients of more than dozen scientific and IEEE society awards. In 2006, Dr. Rohde was honored as Microwave Legend by Microwave & RF Magazine; the selection was based on global voting. In 2009, Dr. Rohde was selected in the list of Divine Innovators of November 2011, Microwave Journal. Based on Dr. Rohde’s 5-decade of scientific creativity and pioneer contributions in the field of microwave and antenna, IEEE has established 2 awards on his name “IEEE Ulrich L. Rohde Innovative Conference Paper Awards on Antenna Measurements and Applications” and IEEE Ulrich L. Rohde Innovative Conference Paper Awards on Computational Techniques in Electromagnetics”. Jerry C. Whitaker is a Vice President of Standards Development at the Advanced Television Systems Committee. Mr. Whitaker joined ATSC in 2000 and has participated in all facets of the organization, from development of standards and recommended practices to representing ATSC at various organizations and venues. Current work is focused on ATSC 3.0―the next-generation digital television system. Mr. Whitaker is the author and editor of more than 35 books on technical topics, including the second and third edition of this book. Mr. Whitaker is a Fellow the Society of Broadcast Engineers and a Fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He has served as a Board member and Vice President of the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Mr. Whitaker twice received the Jesse H. Neal Editorial Achievement Award from the Association of Business Publishers (ABP). He was also named “Educator of the Year” by the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Hobbies include building vacuum tube audio amplifiers and collecting/rebuilding classic radio broadcast hardware.
Hans Zahnd is a pioneering developer of SDR-based communications receiver designs. He operates the company ADAT, which specializes in digital transceiver products. He was working for 36 years as a design engineer in the telecom industry and was playing a mayor role on the design of digital communications systems. Mr. Zahnd has been engaged as an expert and mentor for RF, SDR, and communication technologies at the University of Applied Science in Burgdorf, Switzerland. He is a licensed radio amateur (HB9CBU).

Radio receiver technology is rapidly going digital, with Software Defined Radio (SDR) as a major trend.
Going digital is a tough task because there is still no replacement for masterpieces like, for example, filters, high dynamic range mixers, and of course oscillators. So, a successful design is an appropriate blend of traditional engineering, analog to digital conversion, fast digital processing, and software. The best blend depends on purposes, from mobile devices to laboratory equipment, and changes with the progress of technology. A successful design is also a blend of deep understanding hardware, and extensive simulations.
Communication Receivers is about all of that, clearly oriented to future.
Going through it, I have to switch all the time between basic principles, performance analysis, block diagrams, and electrical schematics.
This is good for learning because this is how the progress grows.
Finally, all the authors are both outstanding professionals and serious hobbyists of radio engineering. Whoever is him/herself a serious hobbyist, or has been sufficiently close to one, knows how far the personal commitment can go, and of course how beneficial this commitment can be to others.
Of course, I recommended this book.
