I love this book. I usually detest reading textbooks, but this textbook is reader friendly. It gives very up-to-date information, that is pertinent to today's issues of emergent bilinguals. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more on emergent bilinguals.

This book is the ultimate finishing touch in preparing for SAT Math

I have been on a long search for the right SAT Math book ever since I took the SAT last year. Since I received a decent score of 730 on the SAT Math section last year, I was very disappointed when I found out that my score stayed the same and did not even go near 800. I immediately started working on common workbooks from Kaplan, Princeton Review, Barron’s, etc. I would go through the books believing I know every single concept and I would easily be able to score 800. However, I always got one or two problems wrong on the practice tests. I finally realized the need for a SAT Math book that is more thorough, advanced, and focused than the usual workbooks. When I saw Paul’s SAT Math that claims to be the book “exclusively for students over 700”, I was naturally attracted to buying the book.
This book is the ultimate finishing touch in preparing for SAT Math for those who are definitely expecting a higher range of score. The book itself is very organized. It consists of seven different categories of problems- Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Data Analysis, Algebra 2, Word Problems, Basic concepts answers and explanations, and Math Category. Each section has very concise yet effective concept reviews, exercise problems, questions from the real SATs. However, what makes Paul’s SAT Math stand out amongst other books is that it has Level 5 problems that are harder. These Level 5 problems prepare you for more complex problems on the SATs which other SAT prep books are most certainly not capable of.
However, what struck me the most was the descriptive answer key that shows every single step with explanatory language and supporting visuals. I have had countless experiences when I struggled to find out why I got a question wrong because the answer key either only said the answer or the explanation was too brief and hard to understand.
This book also has 20 practice tests that will test your deeper and more advanced understanding on the materials. This book is a great aid and I truly believe that it prepared me to score 800, not just a decent score above 700.

Good selection of advanced problems... when are the other books coming?

I am currently using this book to tutor a 11th grader and a 12th grader. This book has a really good mix of advanced problems. It’s really easy to find corresponding chapters in the bluebook. Key concepts noted in the each chapter really helps a lot & it’s good that every key concept is condensed into a half-page summary.

I’ve taught students with many different books, but this book is truly unlike any other book in the market. I just wish there were a basic version of this book so that I can use the same concepts to teach all of my students.

NOT for students who score less than 700

This book definitely is NOT for students who score less than 700. Unlike other books that claim to contain “difficult” questions, this book ACTUALLY contains those tough questions that come up later in the sections. One drawback for this book is that it doesn’t have a lot of questions, but it has some really good ones. Highly recommended!

Solid Sourcebook on Medieval University Themes

Comprising a series of edited manuscripts written by a wide variety of authorities under the guidance of an European editorial board, this volume lives up to expectations as a comprehensive survey of the medieval university. Topics the volume covers include student demographics, student life at the university, university legal incorporation into a recognized institution, educational techniques, guild policies, and many others. Though the text is not written as a popular history, it nevertheless is presented in an accessible manner, and most anyone interested in the topic will find a great deal of useful information concerning the rise of the medieval institution referred to as the "university." Although today's typical university may have substantially migrated from the original aims and goals of the 12th-century University of Paris, Oxford University, or the University of Bologna, it is quite illuminating to see how so much of the original design of the medieval European university has indeed come down intact to us in the 21st century. Further, the differentiation between northern universities (such as the University of Paris, Oxford University, and Cambridge University) and southern universities (the University of Bologna is an archetypical example) is clearly depicted in the work, providing a clear description of the variegation the institution has always possessed over the centuries, not just in today's context. Serving therefore primarily as a reference work, the wealth of knowledge contained in the text makes swallowing the $60 price tag for a paperback more palatable. In this regard, I view the multi-author, edited-version approach of the text as a definite plus: at our disposal is a series of well-written works by a variety of knowledgeable authors who all share the interest in keeping this information alive and available for scholarly research. I look forward to acquiring the entire multi-volume set at some time in the future.

As a short aside, but nonetheless directly related to the subject at hand, I have often made note to myself of the complete lack of background knowledge many students have concerning the historical background of their own university-based institutions. Although it would be perhaps indefensible to argue that knowledge of the historical development of the medieval European university is a necessary prerequisite for becoming a successful graduate, it IS arguable that - particularly for those majoring in Education as a field of study - knowing this material can be illuminating in understanding issues in today's university-based context. If nothing else than presenting a description of medieval pedagogical approaches, this history can inform us of how the university as an educational system can enrich us, and how that many of the devices and techniques now in use and championed as "the latest thing" often have direct correlates from half a millennia ago. Further, issues concerning the unionization of students and of teachers, as well as the attempts at universities to manage both, can be enlightened from the hundreds of years Europe has already had to attempt such practices. This text can help bring to the forefront of our thinking issues just such as these, and is surprisingly interesting as it does so.

Great Characters in a Cute Middle Grade Book

I am so glad that I'm getting to relive my youth through my daughter! Don't take that wrong because I'm not one of those parents....I just love reading books that are geared towards her age range. What I love even more is when we both read the same book and then discuss it! That is the case with ALVIN HO: ALLERGIC TO CAMPING, HIKING, AND OTHER NATURAL DISASTERS by Lenore Look and pictures by LeUyen Pham. I just don't remember there being this many good middle-grade books out there when I was ten years old.

My daughter is probably a little on the older side for this book because it is really aimed for children ages 6 through 10; however, I still think many 10 year olds will enjoy the book as a quick, funny read. Alvin Ho is absolutely hilarious as a young boy who is afraid of almost everything. In this book, his father wants to take him camping and poor Alvin is just terrified of everything that could possibly go wrong. Maybe one of the reason that I liked this book so much is that I can so relate to his feelings about the great outdoors!

This book is really perfect for those kids who are ready to read chapter books, yet aren't quite ready for a book with a lot of pages. This book is a little over 150 pages, but the print is large and there is lots of white space on each page. There are also a few very cute (and funny) illustrations thrown into the body of the chapters. I especially liked that there is a glossary (Alvin Ho's Very Scary Glossary) at the back of the book with definitions of some possibly "new" words.

Kids are going to love Alvin and his adventures. I thought his paranoia was so funny, and I found myself laughing a lot at his insecurities. Even if your child isn't quite ready to read this book on his or her own, it's also a great book to read with your child. This book is being sold as "ideal for any father and son to read together before braving the untamed wilderness. Or, a perfectly manicured trail." Each chapter is just about the perfect length for a bedtime story.

I really thought Alvin Ho was a great character, and I want to go back and read the first novel in the series ALVIN HO: ALLERGIC TO GIRLS, SCHOOLS, AND OTHER SCARY THINGS. If it's anything like this book, I'm sure Booking Daughter and I will both enjoy it! I am looking forward to more Alvin Ho books, and I'm betting that Booking Son is going to love them in a few years.

full of laughs and touching moments

Alvin is still getting into mischief and wriggling his way out of sticky situations in the second book in this series: Alvin Ho: Allergic to Camping, Hiking and Other Natural Disasters. While it didn't tickle me as much as the first in the series, it was a fun read. In the second chapter, Alvin receives a package at the front door.

"I ripped open the kit right there in the driveway. Inside, there were pencils, stickers, handcuffs, and handcuff key, a rope, a Houdini's Greatest Escapes DVD and a gold card.
'Alvin Ho -- GOLD MEMBER OF HOUDINI-IN-A-BOX -- do it yourself escapes'
Calvin whistled. 'Dude!' he said."

How great would it be for a second-grader to get a Houdini-in-a-box kit?! Funny situations turn into funnier situations, as the kids make a straight jacket and then Alvin volunteers to be trapped inside his sister's time machine. I liked how Lenore Look was able to turn funny situations into more poignant ones. Alvin got really, truly scared as his sister left him trapped in the box and forgot about him.

"My dad isn't a superhero, but he can pull me out of anything, even from long, tangled boa constrictors that were squeezing the last wheeze out of me.... 'You're my best friend, Dad. You saved my life.' "

This book has more touching moments like these. It isn't full of quite as many laugh-out-loud moments as the first in the series. But it will still make kids happy reading it. It would make a good family read aloud, especially talking about how Alvin learns to be brave during his camping trip.

I really like how Alvin's Chinese-American culture is simply a part of who he is. His favorite meal is vegetable wontons and noodles. His grandfathers are GungGung and YehYeh. His culture is not a pivotal part of the story, it's just part of the texture that makes Alvin feel like a real kid.

Well liked, but a bit short

Good follow up to the first book (Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things) in what I looks like will be a continuing series (Alvin Ho: Allergic to Birthday Parties, Science Projects, and Other Man-made Catastrophes). Made great bedtime reading for my 3rd grade son - fun and interesting, but NOT scary or overly suspenseful. Nice illustrations too. My only complaint is that it was a bit short. The characters are all really engaging and likeable, and it would be nice if the book had run them through their paces in some additional situations to flesh the book out a bit more.

A Bloody Tale

If you like Lewis B. Patten or Zane Grey, this may not be your kind of western. It is dark, violent and Edge is an anti hero character. Gilman likes to describe in detail how the bullets rip through a body. Yet he keeps the story line at an even pace. It is almost like a spaghetti western in print. It is different and Gilman goes beyond a typical western plot. One device is the play on words....like "bloody summer"....which is not about a season, but a town named Summer. Not a bad series, but it is vulgar and violent.

A TRIZ classic

Altshuller present us an algorithm to solve complex problems. In the past this was the only path to use TRIZ for complex problem solving. Nowadays there are easier ways to do that, so the book is more valuable for historical than practical reasons.

Interesting but of limited use outside engineering.

This is fascinating book that catalogues a theory of innovation in the engineering field.

From my perspective as an educator/science graduate, it would seem to be an excellent book for any engineer. It describes a useful and practical process for solving complex problems in a systematic way. HAs many case studies that are interesting to the laymen too.

For the rest of us, well not as useful. How to fix the wife, mend the kids, retire the boss are not covered.
