The Hate Factory: A First-Hand Account of the 1980 Riot at the Penitentiary of New Mexico, by Georgelle Hirliman

The terror lasted for thirty-six hours. When it was over, thirty-three inmates were dead, all at the hands of their fellow convicts. It was an outbreak of inmate violence unequaled in the annals of prison uprisings. It happened at the Penitentiary of New Mexico-Time magazine called it "the nation's most notorious prison."W.G. Stone was there. He witnessed the beatings, the stabbings, the rape, the torture."Tying the rope under his arms and around his chest, they strung him up on the basketball hoop for all to see. There he would hang for the rest of the riot During those hours of madness that were to follow, inmates would come in and hack at his dangling corpse with knives, beat it with pipes, mutilating it so totally that it was beyond recognition, a raw, bloody mass of flesh, by the time the uprising was over."The Hate Factory

couldn't put this one down
By Ken Holmes
As a resident of New Mexico, I had no idea the extent or barbarity of the prison riot in 1980 at the Penitentiary of New Mexico, just south of Santa Fe. I found a well-worn copy of this book at the local public library. Interspersed with the account of the riot itself and the infamous attack on the prisoners in Cellblock 4, resulting in over 30 horrendous deaths, is commentary from an inmate who was there, on his take on the prison system and his own experience as a long-term inmate. I also read THE DEVIL'S BUTCHER SHOP, a more analytical, detailed account of the history, politics and sociology of the riot. But this book is much more compelling, and the account of the prisoner, "W.G. Stone," is wholly believable. I have to disagree with the "Gimme a Break" reviewer on this one. Wherever prisoners are denied basic human rights, like the denial of visitation rights except through faulty video monitors, or the fostering of the "snitch" system by guards, or the barbaric use of "The Hole," it's easy to see how deep resentment festers, humanity is eroded, and barbarity ensues. Perhaps Stone is right in that rehabilitation is rarely possible and that "frontier justice" was ultimately more humane than locking up men for life. But as long as we have prisons, we have an ethical duty not to treat prisoners like animals, no matter how heinous their crimes. I would highly recommend this book to other readers interested in what was probably the worst prison riots in American history.

The Sleep Of Reason Breeds Monsters
By PDC
Most simply put, this is the most terrifying non-fiction account I have ever read. Certainly the most viscerally frightening dealing with the subject of "correctional" institutions. Many books about the Holocaust, Bosnia, the Inquisition, and other dark periods and events of history are equally or even more disturbing in their depictions of hell on earth. And the heartbreakingly devastating 'A Child Called It', which details an unspeakable case of child abuse, is more upsetting on an intimate emotional level, being as wrenchingly sad as it is horrific. But for sheer gut-level you-are-there terror, 'The Hate Factory' is truly the stuff of nightmares. There is a skin-crawling, white-knuckle immediacy to the chapters which deal directly with the prison riot itself and the jaw-dropping cruelty that man is capable of inflicting upon his fellow creatures. (ISIS could well have taken direct lessons in savagery from this tome.) On a more constructive level, the book is also an eloquent plea for badly needed prison reform. But it's the overwhelming stench of animal fear that is the most memorable aspect of this harrowing tale, and that lingering scent is hard to shake for some time afterward. As a final note, safe to say that even someone who sees the hardest core horror films and shrugs them off, would be hard put to sit through a film based on this book IF it accurately depicted the brutality that is so chillingly and mercilessly described in these blood-soaked pages.

Good first hand account; not well written though..
By John Lyman
I found it to be a good first hand account of what really happened, especially since there really isn't any other first hand accounts in publication (that I know of). I did find it a bit hard to read; the grammar and punctuation was not all that great. I kept having to re-read paragraphs to figure out what the author was saying. I suspect this is a self-published book; I don't think an editor would approve the manuscript the way it is presented. But I still recommend it as a good book to buy. Some of the details absolutely freaked me out. If you want a good non-fiction horror story at a good price, this book is it.
