About the Author

Dr. Isao Ishibashi is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. He was born in Japan, where he obtained his bachelor and master degrees from Nagoya University. After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Washington in�Seattle, he served as a faculty member at the University of Washington and Cornell University, before moving to Old Dominion in 1986. Professor Ishibashi has been involved in research in the areas of geotechnical and earthquake engineering, specifically soil liquefaction, dynamic soil properties, static and dynamic earth pressures as well as seismic water pressure, granular mechanics, slope stability, and used tire application to embankment, etc. He is the author or co-author of over 100 published technical papers that have appeared in journals and proceedings in these areas. He is a member of the ASCE, ISSMFE, ASTM, EERI, and JGS.

Dr. Hemanta Hazarika is professor in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. Born in India, he obtained his bachelor of technology degree in Civil Engineering from the�Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, India and his Ph. D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Nagoya University in Japan. Before moving to his present position, he�worked as a practicing engineer for a�few years�and spent�several years teaching and conducting research in academia, as well as with public sector research institutes in Japan. Professor Hazarika’s research activities include soil-structure interaction, seismic stability of soil-structure, ground improvement geosystem, applications involving recycled waste and lightweight geomaterials, stability of cut slopes, and landslides and protection against them. He has published more than 100 technical papers in international journals and for international conferences and symposia proceedings, several of which have appeared as�contributed chapters in books. He is also credited with serving as the editor of two books in his research fields. He is a member of ASCE, ISSMGE, IACMAG, IGS, JSCE, and JGS.

Easy to read, with nice emphasis on developing intuitive understanding

I have more than two decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, but I like to review the basics periodically, so I decided to give this book a try.

The book does exactly what it aims to do. It provides an introduction and overview of 'soil mechanics fundamentals', emphasizing developing the intuitive understanding of the reader, rather than just presenting formulas or derivations. This emphasis is not only important and helpful, but it also makes the book enjoyable to read.

Another nice feature of the book is that the writing style is relatively simple and straightforward, which adds to the book's reading pleasure and makes the book very suitable for self-directed study.

This book is a good introduction to soil mechanics. It gets to the point without a lot of other stuff. The figures are helpful because they show key ideas. The authors are looking to develop a sense of engineering judgment so they give some rules of thumb and some comparisons of key parameters.

Its a pocket sized soils text. Great for self learners because everything is explained very simply. As a note to the reader I am a mechanical engineering major with a civil minor and this is one of my first civil classes si its all new to me

Must Read For Anyone Getting Into The Music Business!

I rarely offer feedback on a book. However, this is truly a great read. I began as a singer, musician in the early eighties. I have learned much of the business via osmosis, some of it incorrect. This book is deep. If you are new to the business or a veteran trying to REALLY learn the industry, plan on reading this book more than once. The chapters require a good understand of previous chapters to absorb and benefit the material. I discovered great insight for the least amount of investment I have ever spent in the music business.

A Book Worth Its Weight in Platinum

I as a baby-boomer who has had made music an important part of my life "The Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing, 2nd Edition" has enabled me to feel better about not having accomplished a significant success in the music business, and in the process lost the best of my intellectual property. My life as a singer songwriter began in the early sixties having been inspired by the folk music revival and the explosion of many popular music genres that permeated our culture. My bio would mirror the historical patterns quite well: I performed in groups and solo in folk, rock, jazz and country through the years. My best opportunity appeared around 1965 when the manager of a now successful artist wanted to record one of my songs after listening to it on a stoop on MacDougal Street: I asked the artist should I trust him and his response was nebulous so I didn't go to the recording studio. Until I read The Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing, 2nd Edition I regretted that one, and similar decisions that I had made.

A 1A draft status, tech school, enlisting in the Army later anyway, a rocky marriage conspired to altered my path relegating my passion to write songs to a back burner. Through the years I continued to accumulate songs and even attempted to do something with them from time to time, but, an inner paranoia always kept me protective of "my stuff". After college and a second attempt at family life I thought I had learned enough to become my own publisher and record label owner: and this seemed to finally get me heading in the right direction -- another big BUT however -- I spent more on equipment, professionals and such that I found it difficult to see black ink and then I had a son born with a serious heart defect.

I chose to attend to family matters for the next 25 years -- family became the priority.

Now in my sixties I have been re-inspired because of Randall D. Wixen's book: The Plain and Simple Guide to Music Publishing, 2nd Edition. Thank you very much Mr. Wixen. My paranoid protecting of my songs may have lead to meager success thus far, but my MUSIC IS STILL MINE and I can pass it on to my son. And, I still have time to put things in order and give it one more shot at "song writer's heaven"; all because your book has crystallized what I had learned on my own through experience, AND, filled in blanks, AND, has brought me into the present as far as the business realities are, AND, (lastly) your book has put it all into so concise and understandable a guide, that my hopes for accomplishing my life-long dream is better that ever.

How does the algorithmic approach work diffently from the equational approach? Gaylord/Wellin's neat book demostrates that. In cases of the presence of technical difficulties and the absence of the representability in terms of equations, the algorithmic approach is gainning more and more significance and enjoys a promising future. The book covers both the probabilistic systems and cellular automata. Wide-reaching 14 physical and biological systems are presented to suit various readers' tastes. [It would be a plus if in 2nd edition, the economic systems are EXPLICITLY included, although the authors did put some, say, the random walk model, in the book.] Each chapter is short [thus, time-saving for self-study], nonsense-free,systematic, and self-contained. It starts from step-by-step code fragments, to the integration of parts into a elegant program. Then, it was wrapped up with the numerical analysis and visualization both to give a feel of the performance of the model and to blow in a strand of breeze in our sometimes dry computer programming work. [Hopefully in next edition the sample solutions to the end-of-chapter computer projects will be added.] Appendix A and B on MATHEMATICA programming and random number generators concentrate on a few essential points [rather than on everything] and the authors delivered them effectively. In a nutshell, if you're interested in simulation and if you'd like to use MATHEMATICA, I recommend this superb book by Gaylord/Wellin.

The Book To Buy When Modeling Cellular Automata

This is the book to buy if you want to build and run the Cellular Automata pioneered by Stephen Wolfram (inventor of "Mathematica" the absolute best math software and more). Like most of us who have been waiting for more than a decade for Wolfram to finish his opus magnum "A New Kind of Science" (available for pre-ordering here on Amazon.com), one can get a little tired of waiting and want to run some of the sterling images sneak pre-viewed on his WEB site to gain some of the same insights he has been gathering since first discovering this phenomenon in the early '80's. I first bought Gaylord's later book; "Modeling Nature",(also available here on Amazon.com)thinking that would be the definitive guide to actually programming and running the simulations on "Mathematica." It's a great book and has many good examples of other kinds of modeling software but not the kind we are interested in, his "ElementaryRules" for these [very] particular 1-Dimensional Cellular Automata. Buy it, program them, run them, view them, and forever have the way you view the world change!

There are some great appendix, and this book has outstanding information on MathLink, which is one of the worst documented components. Also a great intro to using/programming mathematica in the appendix.

Now the back flap mentions alot of applications, and implies that the book covers them all, well it doesn't. At a high level, yes, but there are not extensive examples in the book covering all of the areas listed on the back of the book.

However, there is great coverage of brownian motion, Ising ( worth it just for this ), and Celular Autmata. There are some great applications. From traffic to forest to the game of life. There is alot packed into this book and it is worth the price.. ( well not 200.00, but under 30, yep ).

The CD comes with everything from notebooks to sourcecode. ( This is old and I have not tried to compile C code or use the binaries on the CD, but for the most part the mathlink stuff does not look like it will have any issues with any C compiler ).

Excellent Social History

I had to buy this book for a college class and I have to say that I am very impressed. Through a series of essays and primary accounts a social history of the age is brought forth, dealing with such subjects as The New South, African-American Politics Under Jim Crow, and Progressivism. These essays, by historians such as Richard Hofstadter and C. Vann Woodward, and first-hand accounts, from such notable people as W.E.B. Dubois, Carl Sandburg, Booker T. Washington, William Jennings Bryan, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, presents a history devoid of all the wars and politics of the upper elite, but instead focuses on more social issues and the everyday American. Many topics are dealt with in this book and it shows just how complex American society was in this changing time.
