Everything you ever wanted to know!

I have always been confused by the art of curling one's hair. And the fact that my hair will NOT keep a curl hasn't helped. I got this book the other day and soo many of my questions have been answered and things make so much more sense now! Not only are there pages and pages of instructions on different curling methods, there are a tonne of different styles with clear instructions for each. At the back there's even a small section on vintage make-up techniques! I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who loves vintage styles or just needs some help figuring curling techniques out.

Durer 101

Dover has been saving the world from itself for decades. Long before the internet and e-books, it was busy resurrecting books from obscurity, reformatting them as readable, affordable editions of great societal value. Now this “Pictorial Series” of e-book allows us to see the best-ofs of major artists lost in the dusts of time and the megalopolis of new art and artists.

There is no great discovery here, no investigation, interview or controversy. There is a simple, quick biography followed by 94 plates and you’re on your own as to their quality and value. I for one have always been fascinated with woodcuts, a particular form of masochism that has the ability to astound when done well. And there are endless examples of it being done well. Durer’s ability to maintain proportion and perspective, his use of shading and depth, and his scientific appreciation of the human body are all on display here.

A good overview of Durer's woodcuts

Durer was a master of detail in his work, and this book includes almost a hundred of his woodcuts. They provide a good representation of his artistry and attention to detail.

Not surprisingly, given it is an inexpensive Dover edition, there isn't a lot of context, just an introduction and titles. In the electronic version I have the images are fine when viewed at their intended size. The appropriate context for this book is that you are getting a lot for a low price, not that you are getting an exquisite presentation as you might expect from a much more expensive book from a fine art publishing house.

Wonderful, a must for anyone interested in printmaking

As a printmaker I really admire Durer work. This book provides 92 of his fabulous prints - all black and white, of course but wonderful. I cannot get over the artistry in his work - each line is clearly shown, yet blends into the fabric of the print, light, shade and shadow all there with just a line. This book is a must for any printmaker, or anyone who has an interest in print making. This book was provided to me in return for a honest and unbiased review.

Odd pacing, but still entertaining -

Three Wishes is a story about a year in the life of the Kettle triplets - Lyn, Cat and Gemma. It highlights all of the major issues that multiple of any age have to deal with, along with some issues that can take over anyone's lives.

The pacing of this story is a little disjointed. It starts at the girls' 34th birthday, then jumps back almost a year and starts from there. The chapters are interpersed with stories about the girls' lives as seen by random onlookers at different point in their lives. And the basic timeline has a lot of other flashback and overlap as well.

What makes this story so entertaining is the interaction between the three girls and the other characters in the story. The characters are well developed and very believable in their given roles.

It gets a little slow at a few points, and like any story told from multiple perspectives, I found myself looking forward to certain characters' points-of-view more than others. But on the whole, this was a very entertaining read.

Liane Moriarty has quickly become one of my favorite authors. I started reading her "What Alice Forgot," loved it and then began devouring her other books. This is the last one I have read, which incidentally is her first! The story started somewhat slowly, and I wasn't getting into the heads of the characters then suddenly it all popped. The only drawback I found was in the editing for there were quotations incorrectly placed and sentences in italics that continued beyond where they should have stopped. I really love how she gets into her characters and stays with them; her funny/witty way of describing incidents the characters get into and how they think about that situation. I love how she describes the areas where the characters go, and I desperately would love to visit Sydney. This was a wonderful look at what it must be like to be a triplet. Each sister has her own issues to deal with and one thing I have noticed after reading all of her novels - there is no formulaic aspect to her characters, similarities yes, but each one stands on his/her own. Can't wait for her upcoming release...

Not in the same league as the other books by this author

I have read all the books by Liane Moriarty and have enjoyed all of them thoroughly. This was the only one I had not read and I was very excited to have one left. Unfortunately, from the start I understood that it does not come close to the other ones and after a few pages I just gave up. I understand that this was her first book and from there it was all uphill. I know a new book of hers is coming up and I am sure i will love it as much as all the other ones.

A Book for Serious Students of U.S. Foreign Policy

Professor Organski's book is a must-read for any serious student of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. It is a book that is sure to offend both those Arabists who pursue the myth that the United States supports Israel based on the whims of the "Israel lobby", and those Zionists who believe that the United States supports Israel out of sentimentality. The reality, as Professor Organski underlines, is that the first U.S. President to supply military aid to Israel was Richard Nixon, hardly a man who was indebted to the "Israel lobby" for his political position. The cold truth is that American support for Israel was a calculated experiment, one that forced such East Bloc clients as Egypt's Anwar Sadat to break from the Soviet fold. Under this experiment, a military option was no longer available to the Arab leadership. Under this experiment, the only road to a negotiated settlement began at the doorsteps of Washington. All of this, accomplished for less than the cost of a single U.S. carrier task force. Although published prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the lessons of this book remain true. American foreign policy has been, and remains, guided by strategic goals and interests, not by tiny lobby groups nor by sentimental attachments.

An excellent book by a world-renowned scholar and expert.

I am a bit biased, because Prof. Organski was one of my favorite teachers in college. Even so, the truth is Organski was, for more than 30 years, a world renowned political scientist. His work became the text books for political science classes throughout the country. His analysis of the Israel - US relationship is trenchant, easy to read, and persuasive. Plainly, in the context of US-Soviet competition, American aid to Israel was a bargain (never mind also the right and moral thing to do). You will love the scholarship, appreciate the keen analysis, and enjoy the easy, almost jargon-less (for this kind of work) style. For anyone who wants to understand how the U.S.- Israeli relationship came to be, this is a great place to start!

Excellent Explanation of the US-Israel Alliance

AFK Organski sets out to examine the theory that the US supports Israel due to the strength of the Jewish Lobby. Organski finds that theory to be woefully inadequate, and sets forth an alternative explanation that is very convincing. First, he destroys the myth of the Jewish lobby using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Organski cited figures that demonstrate that the Jewish vote is not large enough to effect Presidential elections, and the Jewish lobby not rich enough to contribute to enough Congressmen. Furthermore, the causation he finds is that once Congressmen have decided to support Israel the lobby funds them, not vice versa. The quantitative section is very well documented and persuasive. The qualitative section discusses th reason for US support. Organski finds that it is straight strategic purposes that drive US policy to Israel, much like US policy to every country. It wasnt until 1970 that the US really began to give Israel large amounts of aid, and it was clearly in order to balance against the radical Arab states in the region which were financed by the Soviet Union. The partnership increased after the 1973 War, and Israel served its purpose by defeating Egypt and making them turn to the US for support, a process which culminated in the Camp David Accords. Organski's book was written in 1990, so it focused on the Cold War and the containment of the Soviet Union as the reason for US support for Israel. Organksi has not updated his book to include reasons for support since then, but we can surmise he explain it in state goals of countering terrorism, balancing against US enemies, etc. But the main premise of his book is inescapable: The Jewish lobby does not control US policy. It never has and never will. The myth of the Jewish lobby is used by Israel's opponents to explain why the US supports Israel without blaming America while putting the blame on those nasty manipulative Jews. Serious and casual readers alike should examine this book carefully.
