Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God, and Gottfried establishes a firm foundation in the Word of God for our transition out of the "World System" and into the "Kingdom of God". This book is a real eye-opener and an invitation to step out of darkness and into God's marvelous light - not only in the area of finances but in every area of our lives. A wholesmome book about Gregor Mendel

There are a lot of stories about Mendel and how he discovered the heredity. This book by Orel clears all the doubts. Mendel was a great philosopher, his experiments were well planned and he had a clear understanding about what he was doing. It appears that he observed the segregation of characters very carefully and selected the seven characters and the pea plant for his experiments. He was also a great plant biologists and a bio statistician. I believe that he repeated the experiments several times to formulate the laws of inheritance. It is sad that the scientists during that period failed to understand the significance of his findings and refused to honor him with due credit. A great book for all geneticists and biologists who want to know about the history of Mendelian theory of inheritance.

Life and loves of the man who patented atomic energy

Leo Szilard's life is traced from his early childhood in Budapest, Hungary through his student days in Berlin; and the development of the first atomic reactor and bomb. Dealing openly with Szilard's ambitions, obsessions, and fears the book delves into the intriguing details of his intensely adventurous life. For example, the very day in 1933 Adolf Hitler became Chancellor, Szilard caught the last train out of Germany; saving his worldly possessions and himself from the hands of the Nazis. Szilard's pluck is revealed when in England, not having access to a laboratory, he borrows equipment and performs perhaps the first nuclear physics chain reaction experiments in his hotel room! Throughout the details of his evolving atomic theories and practical inventions is woven his love life. Because of his genius, vision, and high human values, Szilard is always regarded with suspicion; especially by the American military bureaucracy. Indeed, General Grove who oversees the United States atomic bomb project has it in for Szilard; and even tries to get him deported as an undesireable alien. This is the story of the man who not only ushered in atomic power into the 20th Century but maintained his individuality while doing so. A somewhat sad love story is woven through the fascinating history of Szilard's atomic power. Many classic photographs of Szilard at important and personal events accompany the very well organized text. Although not a literary masterpiece, this book is a biographical masterpiece and should be read by scholars and romantics alike

Outstanding Portrait of a Catalytic Genius

Anyone interested in Szilard, early 20th Century World History, the A-Bomb, or all of the above will find this book hard to put down. This biography is comprehensive, well-researched and properly kind to its subject. Dr. Szilard probably will never get enough credit for his genius and all his great ideas and achievements, but this book does him justice. He seems to come alive in this book, always several steps ahead of everyone else.
American culture's emphasis on individualism often ignores the more collaborative contributions such as Dr. Szilard's. An original, he both created and collaborated, and this book tells his story.
At times, I thought the author might have been over-stating some of Dr. Szilard's accompishments, but the story is otherwise well-done, and frankly, Dr. Szilard deserves a little promotion, so I didn't mind.

Great Title, he really was a genius in the shadows, a lot like Nikola Tesla.

Szilard was an interesting character, and had a brilliant mind. He isn't well known and doesn't get a lot of credit in the history books. Sort of like Nikola Tesla, great ideas, but someone else ran with them and got the credit. Marconi in Tesla's case, for the wireless, Fermi, Groves, and Oppenheimer in Szilard's, for the chain reaction, nuclear reactors, and the bomb. Truth is, the person who is interested in the science, for science's sake, seldom gets credit for his discovery, the people who commercialize it do. It's good that this book was written about him, and it's a very well written book too.

Shashwat Shriparv

Shashwat Shriparv was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He did his schooling from Muzaffarpur and Shillong, Meghalaya. He received his BCA degree from IGNOU, Delhi and his MCA degree from Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala (C-DAC Trivandrum). He was introduced to Big Data technologies in early 2010 when he was asked to perform a proof of concept (POC) on Big Data technologies in storing and processing logs. He was also given another project, where he was required to store huge binary files with variable headers and process them. At this time, he started configuring, setting up, and testing Hadoop HBase clusters and writing sample code for them. After performing a successful POC, he initiated serious development using Java REST and SOAP web services, building a system to store and process logs to Hadoop using web services, and then storing these logs in HBase using homemade schema and reading data using HBase APIs and HBase-Hive mapped queries. Shashwat successfully implemented the project, and then moved on to work on huge binary files of size 1 to 3 TB, processing the header and storing metadata to HBase and files on HDFS. Shashwat started his career as a software developer at C-DAC Cyber Forensics, Trivandrum, building mobile-related software for forensics analysis. Then, he moved to Genilok Computer Solutions, where he worked on cluster computing, HPC technologies, and web technologies. After this, he moved to Bangalore from Trivandrum and joined PointCross, where he started working with Big Data technologies, developing software using Java, web services, and platform as Big Data. He worked on many projects revolving around Big Data technologies, such as Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Pig, Sqoop, Flume, and so on at PointCross. From here, he moved to HCL Infosystems Ltd. to work on the UIDAI project, which is one of the most prestigious projects in India, providing a unique identification number to every resident of India. Here, he worked on technologies such as HBase, Hive, Hadoop, Pig, and Linux, scripting, managing HBase Hadoop clusters, writing scripts, automating tasks and processes, and building dashboards for monitoring clusters. Currently, he is working with Cognilytics, Inc. on Big Data technologies, HANA, and other high-performance technologies. Rip off!Very basic content.Not worth spending $40 on it.

This book is not at all worth the price it's being sold at currently. It felt like a rip off. It probably should be sold for few dollars in the ebook format. The content as such is very basic and nothing that you can't find in the apache or cloudera documentation sites. I returned this book and instead am referring the documentation straight from the horse's mouth apart from the Oreilly's Hbase Definitive guide.

Please don't buy this book unless you have too much dough to spare.

Great introduction to HBase

For a future project, I had to read up on both Hadoop and HBase. For HBase, I decided to purchase Learning HBase by Shashwat Shriparv. The author starts by introducing HBase and the ecosystem and later guides the reader through installation and configuration (of both the Apache and Cloudera flavours). Of course, the coding aspects such as scripting and Java development are not forgotten and there is a separate chapter on maintenance and troubleshooting, which is very handy to have. In my case, the decision for HBase had already been made, but the uses cases in the last chapter were nonetheless very interesting. The book is written in an accessible style with enough detail and coverage to get started with HBase. I am glad I bought it and can definitely recommend it as a starting point for the HBase beginner.

This book was a helpful overview of HBase, coming from the perspective of someone familiar with Java and some NoSQL technologies (Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis, etc.) but not HBase itself. The author demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of HBase along with some practical use cases. The chapter on case studies was particularly helpful in that regard - the use case profiles included Facebook, Groupon, and Pinterest. My only critique would be that the book could have used a bit more polish from an editorial standpoint. Sentence structure and grammar, for example, could have been improved quite a bit, but overall I thought the author's grasp on the subject matter was solid and helpful for someone in my shoes.

�I originally started writing The Backyard Bowyer as a way to learn the bowyer's craft. As I built bows and taught myself through trial and error, the concept of the book changed. It has been a long road, but�fueled by my passion for traditional�archery, I have never tired from it. I hope that this book allows anyone interested in building bows to just go ahead and do it.
�� My new and final mission for this book is to teach how to build basic�bows from inexpensive materials and with a minimum of investment in tools and space. This book will not show how to make an enduring wooden bow that will last generations, nor to build a bow that will be your lifelong companion. My goal is to simply allow you to build bows, to have your first bow in your hands. I want youto make your own mistakes, conquer your own challenges, and grow as a craftsperson. There are�many books on bowmaking theory and history, and while�this knowledge is very powerful, the�best way to learn something is to do it.
�� I hope that with the basic steps outlined in this book, you will break the boundary between knowing and doing. Build your first bow, and then the theories will begin to make sense. I almost didn't start bowmaking at all, even�after I had become hooked on traditional archery and wanted to make my own bows.�The first�book on bows I had ever read�was the great Traditional Bowyer's Bible, which at once filled me with wonder and abstract concepts that I could not fully grasp.
�� My first bow was a disaster, the product of too much knowledge and not enough practice. I had tried to put too many ideas into that bow, and it snapped under the strain. I had tried so hard to follow rules that I didn't understand, to try and make that first bow the best it could be. I nearly gave up, nearly threw it away and moved on with my life. I hadn't even touched my father's old Ben Pearson fiberglass recurve for months after my failure, but with that bow in hand, I was ready to try bow-making one last time.
�� And that's when I stumbled across another book. The Archery Handbook, written in the forties, was truly a godsend. It was a simple book, with simple instructions on building the type of bows that were mainstream back then. My second bow was very simple, and although it lacked many qualities of a fine wooden bow, it worked. That was good enough for me. Soon I had another, then another. They got better as I struggled with not having a teacher or a good guide to show me what to do.
�� That's why I wrote the Backyard Bowyer. It is a guide that will help you build a bow that will work. The methods and materials are far from traditional, but�are easy enough to master and obtain to�allow anyone, regardless of workspace, income, or level of interest to craft a wooden bow. And that's all you need to get started. About the Author
Nicholas Tomihama was born in Honolulu, where he lived until graduating high school. From there he went to Hilo on the island of Hawaii (the Big Island) to study business management at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
�Even before going to college, he had a knack for making things and working with his hands, perhaps coming from his father who was a jeweler and general jack-of-all-trades. In highschool, Nicholas made hand-turned wooden pens, collected coins, fossils, and toyed around with his father's hunting bow.
�In Hilo, Nicholas was exposed to the party life and turned away from it, instead passing his time exploring the island and getting to his Hawaiian heritage. He began researching and studying native hawaiian crafts, carving bone hooks, crafting woven slings, and other hawaiian arts.
�After becoming more interested with craft than education, Nicholas returned to Oahu without a degree and married his highschool sweetheart, who had kept up with him in a long-distance relationship for the duration of his stay in Hilo.
�Nicholas now lives on Oahu with his wife and young son, Levi. He is an artist who makes hand-crafted bows and arrows and enjoys the sport of archery. He is also an avid reader and prolific writer, who recently published his first book, The Backyard Bowyer, which teaches how to build simple wooden bows for the complete novice.

Best Practical Bow-building Book!

In this immensely practical book, Nicholas Tomihama shows, step by step, how to make a bow out of an ordinary piece of hardwood lumber, including: choosing the board; shaping the bow's the outline; "tillering" -- the heart of making a wood bow; and adding a glued-on handle and glued-on nock reinforcements. As a bonus (he calls it his "bonus track"), he even shows how to make a string and arrows for your new bow. I originally bought it because Tomihama was the first author who explained to me that a bow gets thinner or narrower toward its tips in order to spread the bending force evenly along the limb. You can read this part of the book, and many others, with Amazon's "Look Inside!" feature. Read the back cover. It is honest when it says "Easy to read and follow steps go down to even the smallest detail in the design and construction of basic archery bows."

If you intend to build a wood bow, you may want to read other books, like The Traditional Bowyer's Bible (volumes 1 through 4). But you must read this one.

A Great Guide for Beginners

I've just recently gained an appreciation and fascination of wooden bows while on a hunting trip with my uncle. He uses a fiberglass bow when he goes bow hunting and we began talking about building our own bows to make our hunting experience a bit more fun. We loaned several books on creating bows from the local library but they were all far too difficult to understand for beginners like ourselves. When I found this book I snatched it up right away and my uncle and I have not been disappointed. The book is very easy to understand for beginners like ourselves and the included designs were perfect for our needs. The book even goes into how to construct your own arrows. This book has been an invaluable guide and thanks to the instructions inside we'll soon be hunting with our own custom built bows and arrows. Highly recommended. A+

Perfect for the Beginning Bowmaker!!

I agree with the rating of the other reviewers that this is a 5 star book. It is exactly what the beginner needs to successfully build his or her first bow!

One of the other reviewers said that he has not yet built a bow from the instructions. When he does, he will be successful.

I have built two bows using exactly the techniques in this book, although I did not learn them from this book. I spent several months studying other books and websites to learn the techniques, so this book would have saved me a LOT of time! My first bow broke while I was tillering it. My second one was successful and is shooting at about a 40 pound draw weight.

Tomihama gives instructions for building what are commonly called "board bows", which is a fantastic way to start. You go to a store like Home Depot or Lowes and just get a red oak board that matches the description in the book. Minimal tools and investment is required. He shows you how to build several styles of "flatbows" and then how to build the Robin Hood style English Longbow. The method he shows for building a bowstring is the technique that I have decided is the easiest way to make your own bowstring. I would strongly recommend putting a loop on only one end of the string and using a bowyers knot (timber hitch) on the other end for its adjustability.

This book accomplishes exactly what its title promises. It will enable the beginner to make a successful bow at minimal cost with only a few tools. It's easier that you might think! If you can get the draw weight at about 45 to 50 pounds you can even go hunting with it!

A significant publication that that recounts Antonio Negri's intellectual development

There is a long and distinguished tradition of books written in prison, from Boethius' THE CONSOLATION OF PHILOSOPHY to Thomas More's A DIALOGUE OF COMFORT AGAINST TRIBULATION to Gramsci's PRISON NOTEBOOKS, prison has provided an opportunity for many notable writers to produce some of their finest work. Although best known today for a series of books that he co-wrote with Michael Hardt, in particular the modern classic EMPIRE, he is not as well known in the English speaking world for his solo writings. The occasion for this particular work was his imprisonment, in a moment of paranoid overreaction, for suspected complicity in the kidnapping and assassination of Italian prime minister by the Red Brigade. HIs involvement was shown to extend no further than having been read by some of the Red Brigade members.

These letters are a crucial resource for their account of Negri's philosophical and political development. They are fascinating for capturing a sense of the political situation in Italy and Europe in the fifties, sixties, and seventies and are crucial for understanding Negri's emergence as a prominent political figure. I read EMPIRE some time ago and to be honest had no strong sense of Negri as opposed to Hardt, but now he has taken form as a distinct individual.

I strongly recommend this for anyone who wants to better understand the political situation in Europe during the last half of the twentieth century, as well as providing some background to one of the author's of EMPIRE. I hasten to add that anyone who is interested in political philosophy simply must read that book, which is one of the most important works in political philosophy of the past several decades. It is, in my opinion, a masterpiece, and has already generate a significant literature assessing its arguments. and claims. And their several sequels, such as MULTITUDE and DECLARATION have further established them as at the forefront of current political philosophy. Even if you have not read EMPIRE, this is a work of clear interest to students of the recent political history of Europe.

Negri's Prison Notebook

Negri is most famous for his discourse against capitalist globalization. As a thinker, his work asks readers to questions what they know about democracy. Negri worries that democracy as it is expressed today is largely a system for maintaining order for the exercise of capitalism rather than a political expression of the people.

These worries emerge in the text of Pipeline. Pipeline is a series of letters addressed to a fictional David. Negri's form of prison letters consciously channels fellow leftist thinker Antonio Gramsci's Selections from the Prison Notebooks. Negri's letters were written between 1981-1983 while the author awaited trial on a number of "terrorism" related charges. After the assassination of Italian Prime Minister Moro, Negri was arrested in a series of sweeps that the Italian government designed to dismantle the radical/leftist movements that had flourished in Italy.

Negri personal experiences in prisons throughout Italy are recounted in this unusual autobiographical/memoir/philosophical/call-to-action. Historians of social movements will find Negri's first-hand account of the collapse of radicalism in Italy valuable. Cultural Studies and Theory students will find Pipeline useful for discourse on the dialectic between power and dissent. Pipeline also provides insight into ideas that are integral to Multitude: War and Democracy in the Age of Empire and Empire.

Overall I enjoyed the thoughtful and wide-ranging letters. In some ways the letters are more approachable than the denser tomes Negri wrote with Michel Hardt. Thinkers, philosophers, students, and teachers will be rewarded for their efforts in reading Pipeline.

Negri's truth, biography, fiction

Negri's very personal account of his intellectual and philosophical development as a radical thinker is organized into letters he presents as written while he was in prison, under investigation for connection to the infamous Aldo Moro kidnapping, at least in part. He addresses the letters to "cher David" (who, it appears, is a fictional recipient) and offers his history of his thinking life as a model and perhaps as admonition to a younger man who has (in the fictional world) requested the thoughts and experiences of the older man.

The intricacy of Negri's developing thought, as he wrestles with various dogmas and dialectics, both Catholic and Marxist, and beyond, will feel daunting to some readers, though the real problems for most readers will be lack of familiarity with the many twists and turns of radical history in Europe during the 20th century. Those who have followed the politics, especially of revolutionaries, will recognize many of the names, but the implications of loyalties and betrayals, the ins and outs of shifting associations, may seem too arcane, even though the translator does provide frequent notes and explanations for some of the less familiar details.

As a personal memoir of life in prison, this is not a major work as compared with some other memoirs (some fictionalized, others straightforward) of prison life for political prisoners of the 20th century; as a portrayal of the evolution of the thinking of a revolutionary, however, it is a valuable addition and a revealing, stimulating portrait. For anyone interested in the thoughts underlying the activities of radical activists working for revolutionary change in Europe in the period following the Russian Revolution, this is an important work to read.
