Good but...

For many people and especially for most American fans Brian Bolland is THE Judge Dredd artist. This hefty book collects all his work in one very nice volume and should be appreciated by any fans of Bolland or Dredd.

However, if you're looking for an introduction to Judge Dredd and are unfamiliar with the stories in this book you should NOT buy it. As other reviewers have pointed out there were some crucial story arcs that Bolland only pencilled certain chapters of. Since this book collects work by Bolland and only Bolland the result is some maddenly incomplete stories. Anyone coming in fresh who tries reading this cover to cover is going to be very, very confused. Such newcomers would be much better off finding inexpensive back issues of the Judge Dredd comics published by Eagle back in the early 80's (the entire series of which could probably be bought for just a little more than the price of this book).

Highly Recommended for Bolland ART Fans

If you are a fan of Brian Bolland's artwork than this is a must-have collection. This is one of his pre-DC Comics efforts and it's nice to see his detailed artwork from page to page. The production of the book is excellent with a sturdy hard cover, solid binding, and sharp reproductions. I personally find Judge Dredd stories to be OK, not great, not bad, and since this is a compilation of Briand Bolland artwork you will not always get complete story arcs. But that's fine with me since I bought this to look at Bolland's artwork. Another plus is that you get the artwork in clear black and white without coloring. This shows off Bolland's pencil and ink work much better imo. For Brian Bolland ART fans this is five stars and highly recommended.

Beautiful collection of Dredd comics by a great artist.

Brian Bolland is definitely a special artist and worthy of an over-sized, pricey book such as this. Buyers should be aware that this collection is definitely about the art and not the stories. Every page is art by Brian Bolland so in some cases you only get partial stories that originally appeared in 2000 A.D. I especially enjoyed the covers and pinups section at the back.

For nearly 40 years, Lelooska and his family of four generations of artists performed in their cedar-plank house with a central firepit the age-old myths, dances, and music, wearing the wooden masks and robes of their adopted tribe. A famous Northwest Indian storyteller and his artistic contributions are immortalized in this beautiful collection of tribal folk stories. As a result, the package is as much a tribute to the late Chief Lelooska, who was adopted into the Northwest Kwakiutl Nation tribe, as it is a book for young children. (There's even a CD featuring Chief Lelooska's voice reading the stories.) Entering the book can be a bit slow-going, since it's overloaded with dedications and introductions. Skip them, and aim straight for "The Old Owl Witch," a fingernail-chewing tale that speaks to the tragic fate of a clan of insistently naughty children. Or open up to "The Boy and the Loon," a tale that rewards a sickly boy for his compassion when he meets an ailing loon. In fact, any story can be a starting point, since they are all rich with fablelike morals and tribal symbolism. Although the red, black, and ochre illustrations are stunning, the book's design seems overburdened with the addition of tiny tribal images randomly printed into the text. But children won't care. And besides, the extraneous touches are no doubt a result of the enthusiasm that the publisher felt for the words and images of Chief Lelooska, a beloved elder who devoted most of his life to reviving and preserving the culture of the Northwest Coast Indians. Grade 1 Up. This oversized collection of five tales is both a stunning example of bookmaking and a tribute to the spirit of its creator?a carver, painter, and master storyteller. In the first selection, the village children are warned not to taunt the Old Owl Witch for she bothers no one. However, the curiosity and mean-spiritedness of a few lead the youngsters to her hut, where they are turned into mice. There is no sugarcoating here. The witch declares: "Your parents must learn that children must obey." Another story, in a more humorous vein, tells of trickster Raven, who uses his wiles to reclaim daylight from greedy Seagull. The final entry describes how the brave and resourceful "Beaver Face," despite being teased by the other children for her cleft lip, saves their lives when they are all kidnapped by Tsonoqua, the Timber Giant. All of the stories reveal the Kwakiutls' respect for the natural world, their close connection to animals, and the role of the supernatural in everyday life. Lelooska's paintings command as much attention as his words. The images, rendered in the flat colors and bold patterns familiar from coastal masks and totem poles, are placed for maximum impact. A black-and-white woodcut map shows the animals and tribes of the Northwest. A CD featuring Lelooska's animated tellings accompanies the book. An oversized, overburdened collection of five Northwest Coast native tales that has more appeal for folklorists than for children. A dedication-page note, an editor's note, an introduction by a history professor, and an elaborate map precede the tales, intended to outline how the book came to be. The late Chief Lelooska, of Cherokee heritage, was adopted into part of the Kwakiutl Nation tribe, which celebrated his skills as storyteller, carver, painter, and teacher. As Normandin notes, the chief worked on the stories and paintings until his death, and read them aloud for an audio CD that accompanies the book. The stories are superb, as are the paintings: Often the subject of a story is painted head-on with no background, an imposing and unforgettable figure. In the cautionary ``The Old Owl Witch,'' misbehaving children who harass an old witch in the forest are turned into mice, then exterminated by a flock of owls. ``Raven and Seagull'' features a sickly and abandoned boy who has gone off to die; he ends up helping a trapped loon who returns him to health and to his people. Despite the self-conscious design, which combines typefaces in a manner that may confuse children, and the abundantly distracting front matter, this is a loving tribute to the world of a prosperous people perched on the edge of great forests of hemlock and cedar. My 4 1/2 Year Old Is Transfixed

I thought the book would be a little beyond my son's abilities, but he loved the book from the cover. We have a different edition from the one pictured here - the one we have has two large birds on the cover. I read the stories aloud to him and they held his attention through most of the text - I skipped through some parts. I would definitely recommend this book for reading aloud and/or when the child is able to read himself or herself.

This book was a complete joy for our whole family. It has good pictures, beautiful typography, and tells the traditional Northwestern indian lore in its best style: humourous, frightening, and full of character. A wonderful bonus is a CD with cheif Lelooska himself telling the stories in the book.

This is one of the most remarkable books of fables that I have read. The stories are told in a riveting style, the illustrations are tremendous, and the added bonus of the author himself reading the tales puts this over the top, and into the realm of "outstanding"!

About the Author
Clark L. Hull PhD (1884-1952) was a psychologist and experimenter. He presented lectures and seminars on hypnosis at the University of Wisconsin, then later at Yale University. Hull's work "Hypnosis and Suggestibility" was first published in 1933. It was the first extensive systematic investigation of hypnosis using quantitative experimental methodology. In 1936 his contribution to the field of psychology was rewarded with his election as President of the American Psychological Association. His published contributions to the science of psychology include "Principles of Behavior" (1940), followed by a revision of his theories in "Essentials of Behavior" (1943). His last work, "A Behavior System", was published shortly before his death in 1952.

About the Author

Social Research at its best

Although several reviews critized the author. I believe the author has gone the extra mile to present social research analysis with a more simplistic method from other authors such as Cresswell. Do not worry about the jokes the author makes, not the best ones, however, but if you stick to the reading and forget about the jokes, you will be amazed to how much you will be able to grasp about social research.

A must for those wanting to understand research methods (for social sciences)

I consider this the bread and butter for anyone studying Sociology and learning how to collect data. This helped me with research for history classes as well. It is important to be able to know how to interpret and understand collections of data. Babbie helps you do that. If anyone thinks it is expensive, my university wanted $250 for it new. Just some insight on prices.

Got this as an assigned book for a class. The author makes what might seem like a complex topic really easy to read about and understand. Great examples help you "get it," and he has a sense of humor that makes it almost seem like light reading. Highly recommend it.

About the Author
Lyle C. Brown is professor emeritus of political science at Baylor University, where he served as departmental director of graduate studies and director of Baylor's Foreign Service Program. His international academic experience includes teaching at Mexico City College (now University of the Americas) and postgraduate study at the Instituto Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico. He received his M.A. from the University of Oklahoma and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Brown served as president of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies. His writing experience includes coediting Religion in Latin American Life and Literature and authoring numerous articles.

Joyce Langenegger teaches government at Blinn College and is the college's director of professional development. She received M.A. and J.D. degrees from Baylor University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Fielding Graduate University. Dr. Langenegger has been named to "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" and received a NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence, Teacher of the Year for Blinn College-Bryan, and "Most Valuable Player" award from San Jacinto College for her work as a professor and administrator at that institution. She is a frequent workshop presenter on innovative teaching strategies. Before beginning her teaching career, she practiced law in Houston.

Sonia Garcia, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, is Chair of the Political Science Department at St. Mary's University. She has published articles on Latina politics and is a co-author of MEXICAN AMERICANS & THE LAW: EL PUEBLO UNIDO JAMÁS SERÁ VENCIDO (2004). Sonia also is the lead author of POLITICAS: LATINA PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN TEXAS (2007), which examines the first Mexican-American women elected to public office in Texas from various levels of offices.

Ted Lewis, Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, is Vice President of Academic Affairs at Pellissippi State Community College. He has taught government and political science at the college level for nearly 30 years. He was previously dean of instruction at Loan Star College-Cyfair and Professor, Chair of the Political Science Department, and Director of the Learning Communities Program at Collin County Community College. Dr. Lewis has conducted workshops on Texas election procedure for the Texas Secretary of State and has served as a county party chairperson, on state political party executive committees, and on several statewide candidate campaign advisory committees. He has delivered numerous national presentations and has published articles in such journals as the Community College Journal of Research and Practice, the Journal of the League for Innovation in the Community College, and the National Social Science Journal. He is listed in both WHO'S WHO IN AMERICAN POLITICS and WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS.

Robert E. Biles, professor emeritus and former chair of political science at Sam Houston State University, has taught college students about Texas politics in Texas, Colombia, and Ecuador. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University-School of Advanced International Studies. Dr. Biles is the author of numerous books and articles. His involvement in politics includes serving as a school board member, county party chair, county election supervisor, and staff member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has advised state agencies and held leadership positions in statewide lobbying groups and professional organizations. Dr. Biles has received four Fulbright grants, as well as awards for his research, teaching, and administrative service.

I hate that you have to put it in a binder

I hate that you have to put it in a binder! It's not like a hardcover book with the spine of the book. It has all the information but it's still annoying because the pages can rip easily out of the binder you have!

Smart as a whip!

This title is a translation of Spanish Author Abalos' analysis and disection of the core tenets of modernism by way of the international style, and other movements. I am really provoked and grateful for one chapter which is an essay on the unrelenting domicile in the Jaques Tati Film Mon Oncle as seen through the filter of positivism (in which all endeavor to bring us into the future with a unflinching trust in science & technology) is canny and amusing. I only stumbled across this book while avoiding my required architecture reading (David Hickey's Air Guitar, which I didn't get much out of) and found it slow going at first, but with patience I found that Abalos provides you with much of the foundation you will need to proceed. It can't hurt to have seen some of Jacques Tati's films or even parts of them. I must get my hands on a copy of this book. An intellectually rewarding treat.

I�aki �balos (San Sebastian, 1956) graduated as an architect from the ETSAM in 1978. In 1984 he formed a partnership with Juan Herreros (�balos & Herreros), and since then they have written Le Corbusier. Rascacielos (1987), T�cnica y arquitectura en la ciudad contempor�nea (1992) and Natural-Artificial (1999). Their buildings and projects have been featured in many different publications.

We should expect more from Lonely Planet

I drove around Provence and southeast France for a couple of weeks several years ago (and had an unforgettable time!), so I was excited to have the chance to review this book. As I started to read this guide book, I started nodding and thinking "ok, not great, but not bad either" ... but then I had to stop myself and say: if I was writing a guide book for a road trip around the south of France from scratch, would I write it this way? The answer is no, not at all. Not to be cynical, but it's as if Lonely Planet thought "ok, how can we take our existing guide books and re-package them for a specialized audience with a minimum amount of effort?" Most of the information in this book is in identical or near-identical form in their regular guide books. I appreciate that they added a little bit more driving-specific information, but what they have is barely sufficient. Again, if you were writing a guide from scratch, I'd expect more.

For example, I like the themed itineraries and "The Drive" descriptions linking point A to point B, but they don't really give advice for how to actually execute the logistics. In other words, should I try to do a particular itinerary in a linear fashion (unlikely), or should I base myself in one or two cities and do day trips from them? Likewise, the "start" and "end" points don't make a whole lot of sense, given that most people will need to start and finish in a larger city with air or rail links. Moreover, while the itinerary themes were cute, why not include a "best of" tour that allows one to have Roman ruins, lavender, AND art rather than have to choose one theme or the other? The book doesn't help you to prioritize if you wanted to do some kind of "hybrid" trip that mixed-and-matched a few different suggested itineraries.

Another major issue: the maps are few and far between, and lack the necessary detail. Most of them are too "zoomed out" (for general orientation) or too "zoomed in" (for walking around the city center) to use for driving. Again, great for a regular tour book, but not for a book specializing in road trips. Michelin maps are great, and you'll need one if you just have this LP guide (which really is inexcusable--if you're going to market this as a "road trip" guide, it should have all the maps you need to actually do the road trips!).

The destination guides are a bit skimpy as well. For a book focusing on a specific region, you'd expect it to have all the detail you'd need to choose where to go. Instead, it comes up lacking. As just one example, it completely omits Avignon! Avignon's an interesting and important destination ... this is a short book as it is, so what would it have hurt to add a couple of pages here and there? If this is a guide meant to be used while driving, it doesn't need to be pocket sized--in fact, road atlas-sized might be better!

In the end, I just can't recommend this guide. Instead, get the Michelin map for this region and a regular guide book--the regular LP if you must, but I'd recommend Rick Steves' guide much more highly, or the Eyewitness Guide if you'd prefer more illustrations. Try harder next time, LP!

Repackaged Once Again

In this 126 page book, mostly lifted From France country guide and France Discover, 18 pages in the back are exactly the same as that of "Chateaux of the Loire Valley Road Trips" (Ok, so one line is off, pushing back the formatting a bit to hopefully fool you). Also a few pages in front are the same stuff you get in every LP. After an extended version of their typical itineraries section, which looks a bit like their Discover series because of the extra pictures, it just moves on to "Destinations", which is a condensed version of their regular country guide (when they were in color for a short time).

Also, these few hundred km max drives don't really strike me as a road trip. "Road Trip" has me thinking exciting 6000km loops around the top half of Argentina or most of Turkey, not a spec of France. And they have a section on "driving", which sort of makes sense, except what is there to know about driving in France? It's the same as anywhere else in the West with no particular dangers or pitfalls.

Lonely Planet is no longer a couple of happy hippies, they're a giant corporation who want all your money, even if it means manufacturing an entire new line of books right from the desktop with staple footage. I'm continuously amazed how many books repackage the same material.

It's really okay. It's fun to look at for a few minutes. But why bother?

Very, very basic stuff - 3-

How much info do you need when you travel? If just need a few suggestions and general directions, this mini-guide from Lonely Planet might work for you.

It's well-written but very limited in scope and detailed information. A quick look at the SE corner of France AKA the Riviera or Cote d'Azur. I know the region pretty well and there are a lot of interesting spots left out of this guide. Its limitations extend to restaurants and hotels as well. Given that many travelers now use the Internet to find the latter places, that probably isn't such a great drawback. To sum up, this guide is probably best for getting some general ideas of where to go and what to see in the region, but additional info--maybe from a Michelin Green Guide--will be needed to fill in the blanks.

There is a map of the region included with the guide but it only shows a main route or two and won't be helpful for driving in big towns and cities or on jaunts outside those locations.
