This book is the bible for legal style. If this book were a dessert, it would be 20,000 calories. It is that rich in content. A must have for any law firm, and for young and old lawyers who either are learning to write, or need some help.

Sometimes it can be useful...

Bought this as a supplement to the Bluebook. The examples can be a little hard to follow and not have enough information on a certain topic. However, with this, the Bluebook, UMB, and Coregrammarforlawyers.com (highly recommend) you should be set!!

Anyone familiar with Garner's work will be unsurprised by this pithy, essential guide to legal writing. If I see lawyers do something two different ways, I refer to this book to find out which is right. You can be a good lawyer without being a good writer, but it's certainly easier to be a good lawyer if you are a good writer. You owe good writing to your readers, whether judges, clients, or other lawyers.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel!

This book is very motivating. I got a lot of great tips about saving money and paying off debt that I am already implementing. The book flows very easily and can be applied to anyone in any economical situation. It makes an older saver feel hopeful that his/her economic situation can improve by following the many practical suggestions offered. I did not give it five stars only because a lot has changed in the financial world since it was written ie, the ease with which to obtain mortgages, etc. No fault of Mr. Bach of course, he's done a wonderful job of getting me to save more, spend less, and chip away at debt. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels it's too late to get their finances in better shape.

simple logic

This book taught me that I didn't need to be afraid of the fact that I had not managed my finances properly throughout my life - and that at age 61 it's not too late to start building a nest egg towards financial freedom.

Bach's book is simple to follow, logical, and immensely motivational. My only regret is that several chapters talk about Institutions and support in the USA. I live in South Africa therefore these parts of the book were not relevant to me. But Bach gave me the leads to research the equivalent institutions in my own country.

I recommend the book to anyone who, like me, has fooled themselves by thinking all their working lives that money is not important. It's a crucial aspect of wellbeing!

I am 65 and benefiting from David Bach's books

In almost all of David Bach's books, he describes a file system for your financial files. I had a file system. But when the file cabinet broke, and after I started putting my important papers in folders in boxes, and then they filled up and I left them on top of a table... the paper fire hazard finally had to be dealt with. Although I didn't follow his system literally, it inspired me to scan all this rubble and organize it in my computer (about 1 month of effort). The very personal files (those with Social Security numbers and account numbers) are stored on my Iron Key. The paper in the living room is nearly gone by now, and I can find my documents all the way back to 2004 instantly and easily.

If you are young, any of David Bach's books will be helpful regardless of their title. You are never too young to start saving, and he has great advice on how much, how and when to do this. Goals such as retirement and college are important. But if you just start building your financial portfolio as early as you can, you almost won't need to worry about the goals - the money will be there when you need it. David Bach also helps you to differentiate need from want, and identifies what "wants" waste your hard earned money.

I recommend the Finish Rich series for everyone, young and old alike. These books are must haves!

Maid to Translate Will Help Break Down The Spanish / English Language Barrier

In "Maid to Translate", Maria Flores Shaw covers a large variety of topics and would be good for use by anyone looking to hire a primarily Spanish speaking housekeeper, whether on a bi-weekly basis on up to a live-in housekeeper or nanny. Conversely, this guide would also help a Spanish speaking family that is considering hiring an English speaking person. This very thorough book breaks down the entire process of house cleaning into tabs that span the gamete from hiring to house rules to specific cleaning of each room in the home.

Each section provides guidelines and useful phrases in English and in Spanish tailored for the specific room and for the specific task. The level of detail in each section is outstanding. Included in each section is a list of common vocabulary words. The entire book from start to finish contains check lists that can be completed as needed. This is one of the outstanding features of this book.

I found no situation that I encounter in my home that was not adequately covered in the book. Most situations are covered specifically and extensively covered; for example in the laundry section, a check box that could be completed asks to "Check pockets for: cell phone, coins, crayons, credit cards, gum, lipstick, nails, papers, pens, receipts, and tissues." This is the level of detail typical throughout the volume.

Also throughout the book are reminders to say "please" and "thank you". There are also pages containing "Words of Encouragement" and "Room for Improvement", and "Tips on How to be an Effective Housekeeper". The final tip on that page (p. 15) can be applied to all work that is undertaken and is not in any way limited to housekeepers.

This hard cover book has a spiral design allowing it to be laid flat allowing for pages to be easily photocopied. The pages are very high quality glossy paper. In this way, the volume resembles many cookbooks I have seen. The book is attractive and well made. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to interview and hire a housekeeper or cleaning service.

Pretty Good Deal for Your Money, this Pro-Player Endorses

What to say about this one...At the beginning of this collection I was extremely pleased. Everything is written in a very easy to read while playing format. This is a collection very reminiscent of older arrangements of music, almost like a fake book. I especially like this because when you are sight reading or playing a long time, just turning pages, it is good to have a book that makes sense for the professional player. I also like that the words are included, and even verses which do not make it into other arrangements. As I often sing while playing, this is very convenient.

Now, that was the first half of the book. The second half of the book seems as though the publisher just quit trying. The selections chosen are either obscure or resemble common funeral repertoire than Christmas. And the handy one song per page or two line up is lost. This is especially noted in annoyance when traditional Christmas hymns which should be easy to put on one page are divided by page turns, which as any player knows is not useful at all, due to the repeats in said hymns.

Also the a large handful of the keys are pitched quite high, which is fine for me and any professional soprano or tenor, but might be an issue if attempting to use this collection to lead in Christmas Caroling events or later at night when most vocal registers drop. I enjoyed the keys chosen, but again in a non-professional player this might be a deal breaker as many flats and sharps (and original keys- yeah!) are included.

Lastly I will say that the pros of this collection outweigh the cons, and it is useful to me. It also contains the obscure in collection form "All I want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth", which is why I purchased it in the first place.

And note, It is a bit cheaply made on very thin paper, and does not lie open well. Make sure you have large clips on hand to keep things in place while playing.

Great Collection of Christmas Songs

This collection is excellent. I have been working on the piano myself for several years and am finally up to this level of playing--there are many classics and, yes, some that I didn't know. But the fun is being able to play and enjoy them all over again. A great book matched by its great price!!

What a misleading title

Although this book contains some known Christmas standards, most of the songs in this book I have never heard of before. I have sung all my life and if I haven't heard of them, they are obscure. Now, some I have heard of but they are not songs that you could gather around and sing together. No one would know the songs or the words. Pass this one up.

A bold call to fall, get up, and try again

This book definitely works as a standalone piece, but it's meant to build upon her prior works. As Brene shares in the first chapter, the progression of her works is that the first book, http://www.amazon.com/The-Gifts-Imperfection-Supposed-Embrace/dp/159285849X, has the message "Be you," while the next one, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1592408419/, is a call to "Be all in." This book? "Fall. Get up. Try again."

This isn't another book telling you it's okay with fail. No, the assumption is that you have failed or will do so in the not too distant future. What will you do when it's time to get back up? In the author's words, "my goal for this book is to slow down the falling and rising processes: to bring into our awareness all the choices that unfurl in front of us during those moments of discomfort and hurt, and to explore the consequences of those choices." In this book, she uses stories and research, but unlike previous books, many of the stories in this one are her own personal ones. That makes it feel a little less like a book and a little more like an encouraging yet tough-love conversation with a trusted friend or mentor.

Truth and Dare: An Introduction
This part of the book got me a little nervous, if I'm honest. It was here I realized that this book was all about drilling down deep into the most difficult and uncomfortable moments in our lives, getting honest, and holding ourselves accountable to move forward in the after. I wasn't sure I wanted in on all of that. It seemed hard and dirty and messy and, well, uncomfortable. For starters, she dives into the idea that failure is painful, poignantly pointing out that our celebration of redemption often skips over the real hurts that needed redemption in the first place. We're guilty of "gold-plating grit," she writes, as we make failure seem fashionable without acknowledging the inherent desperation, shame, and dismay. Then enters my favorite Bren�ism from this book: "the [awesome] deficit." What we need - and lack - is "a critical mass of [awesome people] who are willing to dare, fall, feel their way through tough emotion, and rise again" instead of just glossing over the pain or stuffing it down deep or taking it out on other people. (The bracketed word above isn't what she wrote, but Amazon's review guidelines won't publish a review with the real word. It's bad plus a synonym for donkey.)

Chapter 1: The Physics of Vulnerability
Here, vulnerability is presented as courage rather than weakness. Just as I remember the laws of physics from high school, Bren� offers a new twist: if we are brave enough often enough, we will fall. That's what the physics of vulnerability is. Being brave and falling changes us for the better, while the individual path can be isolating and the need to ask for help challenging. As she writes about our being wired for story, I couldn't help but think of two powerful books (both from a Christian perspective, FYI, in case that's not your thing): Nish Weiseth's http://www.amazon.com/Speak-Your-Story-Change-World/dp/0310338174/ and Annie Down's http://www.amazon.com/Lets-All-Be-Brave-Everything/dp/031033795X. The most powerful point from this chapter, though, is that comparative suffering is detrimental: hurt is hurt, and love is needed in response without ration.

Chapter 2: Civilization Stops at the Waterline
The title of this chapter comes from a Hunter S. Thompson quotes. But the waterline is also a call to a powerful story Bren� uses to open this chapters, about her husband and a morning swim and a vulnerable conversation for both of them. Then she lays out a story-telling paradigm - borrowed from Pixar - to apply to our lives in how we deal with the conflict parts in our real-life stories. This is where the meat of the book emerges. The rising strong process is (1) the reckoning, as we walk into our story, (2) the rumble, as we own our story, and (3) the revolution as we transform how we live as a result of our story. That's how we can rise strong from our failures.

Chapter 3: Owning Our Stories
This is where Brene challenges us as readers to accept or turn down the invitation to own our stories, rather than minimizing, compartmentalizing, hiding, or editing them. Owning our stories also means we're not defined by them or denying them. They are ours. Then to do so, the three steps begin...

Chapter 4: The Reckoning
As we reckon our stories, Bren� pushes readers to feel and recognize our emotions and then get curious enough about them to dig a little deeper. Doing so, she writes, keeps us from offloading our hurts in a variety of unproductive ways: lashing out our hurts, bouncing our hurts away as if they don't matter, numbing our hurts through one or more methods, stockpiling our hurts by keeping everything inside, or getting stuck in our hurt. In this chapter, she also offers amazing strategies for reckoning with emotion, and I know I'll botch them if I even attempt to summarize them.

Chapter 5: The Rumble
In this chapter, we reexamine our stories, diving deeper to mine for truths, including errors in our own first retelling of the failure tale.

Chapter 6: Sewer Rats and Scofflaws
This chapter takes the rumble a bit further with discussions of boundaries, integrity, and generosity.

Chapter 7: The Brave and the Brokenhearted
This chapter as a whole is too meaty to succinctly summarize in this review beyond the subtitle: "rumbling with expectations, disappointment, resentment, heartbreak, connection, grief, forgiveness, compassion, and empathy." On a personal note, my heart jumped and then sank and then fluttered when I got to this chapter. For reasons not relevant to this review, I'm finding myself to be the brave and brokenhearted this week, and it's hard. I saw the title and my heart jumped as I thought, This is the one for me, my current faceplant situation. Then I read the subtitle and my heart sank as I thought, But Bren� isn't going to make this easy, because it isn't easy and I'm sure there aren't shortcuts, plus she's been telling me to feel and I don't really want to right now. Finally, my heart fluttered, knowing this was part of my rumbling. I needed to drive forward to rise strong.

Chapter 8: Easy Mark
This chapter continues to expand on the concept of the rumble - which makes sense, because Bren� states in chapter 2 that the second day/stage/point is the most important in the process. In her reckoning-rumbling-revolution paradigm, then, it makes sense to dissect rumbling the most. This chapter's subtitle also describes much of the content: "rumbling with need, connection, judgment, self-worth, privilege, and asking for help."

Chapter 9: Composting Failure
In this chapter, Bren� dives deeper once more into the rumble, this time with the subtitle: "rumbling with fear, shame, perfectionism, accountability, trust, failure, and regret."

Chapter 10: You Got To Dance With Them That Brung You
Yep, another dive deep chapter on rumbling, this time "rumbling with shame, identity, and nostalgia." This one had a lot of gut punch for me, and Bren� - at the risk of looking like a brat - shared a vulnerable story that helped me get vulnerable with myself in return in much needed ways.

Chapter 11: The Revolution
The revolution is what comes after the rumbling. It's the act of rising strong, but it can't be done before all the prior work. Revolution is the act of intentionally choosing authenticity and worthiness as an act of resistance in this world. With this the last chapter, Bren� closes it out with a poem by Nayyirah Waheed, ending with "we are rising strong."

This book is a bold call to fall, get up, and try again. May we all rise strong.

I'm a Fan, But This Book Missed the Mark

I have loved Brene Brown's books but this one didn't resonate. Too many personal anecdotes and examples that didn't apply. I got tired of her "cussing" and while I appreciate that she's proud of being from Texas, a list of why she's a Texan didn't apply to this book. I felt it was something that would have worked better on her blog. Brown's other personal examples of people around her "making up" things, her hatred of some poor woman she had to room with at a conference, and her drawn out story about a vulnerable moment with her husband seemed like a stretch she used to try and illustrate a point. They fell short.

The same is true for the "from the research" stories she told. They were long, drawn out, and overly forced to fit into her point. This PAINS ME to say this, because I have loved just about everything else she's done or written. In fact, I'd probably give this two stars if it wasn't her. I appreciate this effort but it really seemed like she didn't have enough material to make this book a helpful, practical reference. If you're looking to really "rise strong" and start again I would recommend Daring Greatly instead.

Could be clearer

Brown has some interesting ideas about getting back up after a face-plant, but the prose is so jargon-y it's difficult to figure out exactly what she's trying to say. The book attempts to lay out a 3-part "Rising Strong Practice," but there are so many sub-parts and meant-to-become-buzzworthy phrases that I found myself wondering what exactly she's pitching, other than ongoing curiosity about one's emotions.
